The History and Future of the Present Revival - Part 9

Over the last couple of weeks, there has been an increasing swirl of controversy regarding Todd Bentley. I have had almost daily contact with him, and he asked me to post the following:

Todd Bentley asked me to convey his appreciation for all the prayers, expressions of love, and concern while he tries to navigate through this present situation. He is grieved by the trouble and confusion this has caused, especially to his friends, coworkers, and all who have trusted him. He wants to make a clear statement about it, acknowledging his responsibility in this and the mistakes he made, but he feels that he should first meet with Pastor Bill Johnson, who is out of the country and will not be available for a couple more weeks. He asks that you would continue to pray for him, and he thanks those who are willing to be patient. He wants to do this right and not hastily or superficially.

I would like to accept personal responsibility for counseling Todd to wait until he has talked with Bill before trying to make the “full disclosure” of his mistakes. This needs to be done right and in a way that does not unnecessarily hurt even more people. In just a couple of weeks, things should have calmed down enough for a statement to be made. Impatience is not a fruit of the Spirit, and I have personally never seen anything done under the kind of duress and pressure that some are trying to exert at this time that ended up not being a mistake.

The only thing that I have received from the Lord about this matter directly is that “those who rush to judgment will be exposed.” This entire matter, including the Lakeland Outpouring, is a test. To me, the miracles, healings, salvations, and profoundly changed lives that resulted in people, some that I personally know, make all that is happening now still worth it, many times over.

My opinion of the Lakeland Outpouring has not changed, and it will mark a demarcation point for the church that will have a positive impact on our future. I greatly appreciate all who helped to make it possible, and I also appreciate the devotion we are seeing to not compromise basic biblical standards of morality and integrity. If we handle what is now before us rightly, it can have an even greater impact than the Outpouring did to encourage and strengthen the church for the great tasks before us.

I have no doubt that many of the statements that are now being made are going to be regretted by those who made them. Since I am appealing for a couple of weeks to give Todd the chance to process these matters and meet with Bill Johnson, I think we should give any who may have made premature statements some grace too. There are leaders who are applauding some of these statements, but almost every Christian that has talked to me about them, as well as most of the leaders I have talked to, thought that they were hastily made statements meant to cover their bases which cost these leaders a lot of credibility. I have only read a few, and that was not necessarily my perspective, though it is very obvious with some.

Even if this is the case, this is a natural tendency when someone is wounded. I think we should resist writing off these people and maybe have a moratorium to allow everyone a chance to retract what they have written for the last couple of weeks. We are told in Galatians 6:7 that we will all reap what we sow, which means that if we want to receive grace, we should give it, and if we want to receive mercy, we should give it. There may be some of this in my own writing that I am not able to see because I too am hurt by this situation. Therefore, I am also asking for grace and mercy if this is the case.

My main concern is that some of the worst doctrines and actions taken in church history were the result of people responding out of their wounds rather than by following the Lord. A lot of people are understandably hurting right now. Even so, those who resist taking action or making statements out of their pain, or under pressure, will be glad they did. Again, impatience is not a fruit of the Spirit, and it will never lead us to where the Lord wants to take us. Those who rush to judgment, or are hasty to take action, are not treated kindly in Scripture, and are likely to pay a high and unnecessary price for it.

I recommended to Todd to allow a panel of those who are considered true elders in the body of Christ, who could be impartial, to judge this situation, and he readily agreed. He did not make any demands or suggestions about who should be on the panel. He only said that he felt he should not cross the line and say anything negative about his wife, and that he intends to continue to love her and his children, and take care of them.

The Apostle Paul lamented in I Corinthians 6:5 saying it was to their shame that there were no judges among them, yet they were even called to judge angels. The lack of elders, who are also called as judges, is probably still the main cause for much of the shame that continues in the body of Christ. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of the Lord’s throne as we are told in Psalm 89:14, and if we are going to walk in His authority there must be a place for due process that is a standard of justice. God obviously cares very deeply about people being treated fairly and that His standards of righteousness are upheld. His seat of authority demands this for a foundation.

One thing we can be sure of—the Judge is on His throne and all of this is going to work out for good for His people. I am more encouraged every day at what is unfolding and at the great opportunity this situation is for us. The Holy Spirit moved upon the chaos in the beginning and look at the beautiful creation He brought forth! He knows how to do this and seems to love the opportunity that chaos gives Him to show what He can do. This, too, will work out for good to everyone who loves Him and is called according to His purpose. We have this as a sure promise from the One who cannot lie.

Questions and Answers About the Present Outpouring - from Rick Joyner

We are receiving many questions about the present outpouring of the Holy Spirit, so I will periodically take those that seem to be the most common or important and try to answer them. Please keep in mind that many of these questions are worthy of far more time and attention than I can give to them here; therefore, I can only address them briefly. Even so, there can be merit to just addressing important issues superficially as even some of the New Testament epistles do the same. However, I am doing this to offer a perspective and a position rather than give in-depth answers. RJ.

Question One: The Bible says in the last days there will be true prophets and false prophets, with false prophets performing many miracles which can deceive God’s own people. How can we tell if a prophet is false?

Answer:
This is probably a reference to the Lord’s statement in Matthew 24:24:

"For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect.

Signs and wonders follow true believers. As Pharaoh’s sorcerers proved, signs and wonders can be duplicated by deceivers for the purpose of deceiving. This is why the Lord told us that we should judge each one by their fruit, not by the signs and wonders that follow them.

Both the Lord’s messengers and the devil’s messengers will come with power. The battle between light and darkness is a power conflict, and as we proceed toward the end of this age we can expect it to increase. However, that is not all that the conflict is about. It is the battle between truth and deception. Just as the power the Lord gave to Moses easily surpassed that of Pharaoh’s sorcerers, the Lord can easily overwhelm the devil with His power. The Lord does not do this because He wants His truth to prevail, but loving the truth, not just power, should be the devotion of our hearts.

For this reason, the Lord does not send His messengers with the power to heal and to do miracles just to prove His power. He could do that much more boldly in ways such as stopping the sun from going down as He did through Joshua. The Lord sends His messengers with power to help people because He loves them. The Lord upholds the entire universe with the power of His word, and He could instantly rearrange it if He so chose to display His power. His power is demonstrated through His messengers to reveal His nature and character more than just His power. He heals because it is His nature to heal the afflicted. Therefore, we should be seeking His nature and to demonstrate His nature through the fruit of the Spirit as much as His power through the gifts of the Spirit.

Contrary to this, the devil sends his messengers to demonstrate his power in order to deceive, intimidate, and control. This is why the principle that the Apostle Paul taught in relation to the man of lawlessness is important, which we see in II Thessalonians 2:9-10:
that is, the one whose coming is in accord with the activity of Satan, with all power and signs and false wonders,

and with all the deception of wickedness for those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth so as to be saved.

The proof that someone is from Satan is that he is in accord with “the activity of Satan.” This should be easy for even a new believer to discern. If someone is preaching the gospel, leading people to Jesus, this is not an activity of Satan. If someone is healing the sick, setting the captives free in the name of Jesus, and turning people to the Lord, it is the Lord.

We should be wary of those who are just preaching a doctrine instead of Jesus. Are they leading people to follow them instead of Jesus? Edgar Cayce had a remarkable gift of prophecy, and he claimed to be a Christian, read his Bible every day, and seemed to have a godly demeanor, but he did not lead people to Jesus or to the atonement of the cross, but to a psychic realm. The effect of what Cayce did was to lead people to seek supernatural knowledge completely apart from the Lord. We should not be in search of supernatural knowledge or power for any other reason than to serve the Lord.

To combine what both Jesus and Paul said concerning signs and wonders, we should evaluate those who do them by both the fruit and where they are trying to lead us. A good example of the contrast between the true and false signs and wonders is found in Acts 8:5-12:

And Philip went down to the city of Samaria and began proclaiming Christ to them.

And the multitudes with one accord were giving attention to what was said by Philip, as they heard and saw the signs which he was performing.

For in the case of many who had unclean spirits, they were coming out of them shouting with a loud voice; and many who had been paralyzed and lame were healed.

And there was much rejoicing in that city.

Now there was a certain man named Simon, who formerly was practicing magic in the city, and astonishing the people of Samaria, claiming to be someone great;

and they all, from smallest to greatest, were giving attention to him, saying, "This man is what is called the Great Power of God."

And they were giving him attention because he had for a long time astonished them with his magic arts.

But when they believed Philip preaching the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were being baptized, men and women alike.

Simon used magic arts to point to himself and make himself out to be someone great. Philip came proclaiming Christ and His kingdom, not himself. This does not mean that an immature evangelist will not talk too much about himself or maybe even use the signs to try to verify his own ministry, but if he is only doing this and not preaching Christ, then there is a serious problem.

Pride caused the fall of Satan, and it is the basic nature of Satan. Contrary to this love is the foundation of true spiritual authority. It was for this reason that when Jesus felt compassion for the sheep, He became their Shepherd. When He felt compassion for those in darkness, He became their Teacher. True spiritual authority is seeking to do good and set people free, not use the power of God to promote ourselves or control people.

We must also keep in mind that all mature prophets began as immature ones. One can be immature or even self-centered and prone to rebellion and sin like Jonah, but not be false, as we see that even the Lord Jesus verified Jonah’s ministry. Even Elijah came under such a severe depression that he was deceived into thinking that he was the only one left faithful to the Lord. He wanted the Lord to take him. It is right to examine the fruit and the place where the signs and wonders are leading us, but we must also keep in mind that even the greatest treasure is found in earthen vessels, and except for One, no other prophet or apostle has or will be perfect.

Paul the Apostle started out as an immature apostle, writing in one of his first letters that he was “not inferior to the most eminent apostles” (see II Corinthians 11:5). In a letter he wrote about six years later, he said that he was “the least of the apostles” (see I Corinthians 15:9). In a letter he wrote some years later, he said that he was “the very least of all saints” (see Ephesians 3:8). In one of his last letters, he wrote that he was “the chief of sinners” (see I Timothy 1:15). With his increasing maturity there was increasing humility, not pride. However, I think we would all like to have sat under the ministry of even an immature Apostle Paul.

False prophets are trying to lead people away from Christ to worship other gods, and their signs and wonders will lead them away from Him instead of to Him. When people are immature or are running from God’s purpose in their life like Jonah, or have serious errors in their life as Peter did at least twice, that does not make them false.

Question 2: What is the significance of all the talk of angels?

Answer:
It should be a bit of a concern that so many seem to have a problem with this. The Bible talks far more about angels than anyone. The interaction of angels with people is found throughout the Scriptures. They are ministering spirits who minister to those who are the heirs of salvation, and they are messengers who are constantly bringing messages from God to His people. Seeing angels and receiving messages from them is actually far more normal for God’s people in Scripture than not seeing them and not receiving messages from them. The reason some may be having a problem with this is because they may not have seen them or received messages from them, but biblically, this lack of experience should be more of a concern than having them.

This is significant because the activity of angels seems to be increasing, which does seem to be a precursor to a major or important move of God, of which I think we certainly are in the first stages.

Question 3: What about this female angel named Emma that some claim to have seen and received messages from? Aren’t angels “neither male nor female?”

Answer:
When the Lord Jesus said that there would be no marrying in heaven, but we would be like the angels in heaven, neither male nor female, this is a truth we can be sure of (see Mark 12:25). However, as angels often appear as people, to the point that Paul even wrote that we sometimes entertain them without being aware of it, they are obviously appearing as either male or female, but that does not mean that they are.

I have seen many angels. I have seen them dressed and appearing like humans, and I have seen them in what appeared to be spiritual garb or a spiritual otherworldly substance. I have seen both angels and demons with swords, which I do not understand how a sword could have an affect in the spiritual realm, but at least some carry them. Maybe this is for our effect because how they appear is part of the message.

When I asked Bob Jones about Emma, the messenger angel who has come to him on occasion to declare that there would be an outpouring of healing, Bob felt that she came in this form that was to him like a mother’s compassion, which to Bob was the greatest compassion.

The meaning of the word Emma is “whole,” which is part of the revelation. In Scripture, when one was healed it was often said that they were “made whole.” This, too, is obviously part of the revelation that the Lord wants us to obtain by sending a messenger about healing whose name means “whole.”

I have also heard it said that there is an “Emma” who seems to be what the Bible calls “an angel of light” or a false angel. That would not surprise me, but it would surprise me if there was a false angel using this name without there being a real one. The reason why there are no counterfeit $3 bills is because there are no real ones. I have never known the devil to create anything, but only counterfeit what God is doing, just as there would not be any false prophets if there were not real ones. There are also cult angels that call themselves Michael or Gabriel.

I have witnessed the fruit of this angel called Emma visiting Bob Jones, and it was good and it was God, not the devil. Healing did break out; it glorified the Lord and not the devil, and it greatly encouraged and helped God’s people.

We must also heed the warning in Colossians 2:18-19: “Let no one keep defrauding you of your prize by delighting in self-abasement and the worship of the angels, taking his stand on visions he has seen, inflated without cause by his fleshly mind, and not holding fast to the head….”

This does not mean that everyone who sees angels or talks about them worships them, just as it does not mean that those who take their stand are inflated in their fleshly mind or do not hold fast to the Head. We need to keep in mind that there was no punctuation in the original text. For example, Peter took a stand on a vision he had seen that compelled him to first preach the gospel to the Gentiles. However, it is quite easy to tell those who are carnal-minded, not holding fast to the Head, and standing on visions, which will often be in conflict with the Scriptures or the Spirit of the Lord.

We should always keep in mind that prophecy, whether in dreams, visions, or words is never given to establish doctrine. This is the place for the Scriptures alone. Prophecy can confirm the teaching of Scripture, such as the vision that Peter had, but prophecy is usually for the purpose of revealing the strategic will of the Lord, not for doctrine.

Question 4: How does one restore a fallen leader, and can a fallen leader return to the pulpit?

Answer:
This has been asked frequently, even though it does not seem to be directly related to the present outpouring. However, the “how to” of restoring fallen leaders is a question that may have a big impact, not only on the present outpouring, but on all future ones as well. The body of Christ, in general, has not done well in restoring falling leaders in recent times, but we must as we are told in Galatians 6:1:

Brethren, even if a man is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, lest you too be tempted.

One “how to” in restoration that we read here is to do it in a spirit of gentleness, looking to ourselves, which I think implies that we could all fall if it were not for the grace of God. Keep this in mind or we, too, will be tempted. We should never approach this with the arrogance that we have not fallen but rather just to help a brother or sister, who is also one of God’s own children.

We can also conclude from this verse that the “spiritual” do restore others. Restoration, which includes redemption and reconciliation, is the basic purpose of God in the earth, and is therefore a foundation of all true ministry.

We also can conclude from this verse that anyone who has done anything should qualify for restoration. However, restoration means far more than just forgiving them; it means getting them back to where they were before they fell.

It is also obvious that when one has fallen deeply and for a long time into a transgression, the restoration process will almost certainly be deep and lengthy. The restoration for those who fall means their minds must be renewed; a process that can take years for even the most devoted Christians. This is rarely an easy or quick matter.

For example, it would be wrong to treat a single fall to immorality the same way that we would someone who has been in one adulterous affair after another for many years. It is true that even a single adulterous encounter still reveals a gate of hell that is open into someone’s life, and it must be found and shut, but it is foolish to treat two entirely different matters like this the same.

Stealing a candy bar is not the same as murder. However, someone who murdered in an instance of jealous rage when doing something like catching a spouse in an affair, may not take as long to restore as someone who has been a petty thief all of his life. We have to take every case individually. I also doubt that there has ever been perfect repentance or perfect restoration. We are not trying to make people perfect, but whole.

Question 5: How do you keep from sensationalism during a revival?

Answer:
Why try? I’m not saying by this that we shouldn’t try to control it, but if this is a big deal to us, it could be for a very bad reason, and we need to examine why it’s a big deal to us. In the Gospels, those who were offended were those who were the Lord’s constant opposers and accusers and who ended up having Him crucified. They hated the emotional expressions of the people toward the Lord or the things that He was doing. This is often a telltale sign of an evil religious spirit.

Revivals are sensational. Any touch from God is sensational, and people, in their exuberance, will be expressive about it. A good example is how the Lord told the woman at the well just one little detail about her life and she went running off telling the people in the city that He had told her “all the things that I have done” (see John 4:29). This was a bit sensational I would say, but the Lord used it, and soon those who came out to see Him believed because of their own experience.

We have no record of the Lord rebuking this woman, and by His typical style, I doubt that He did, but He may well have done some teaching on truth and loving truth that may have gently convicted her of these exaggerations.

If God is moving, we do not need to exaggerate. Because truth is our basic commodity, we need to be devoted to it in all things. However, it is hard not to get truly excited when God is moving. Some people are more emotional than others and are prone to see things bigger and grander than they may be, which is not the truth. It is just the way that they see things. Others see them darker and smaller than they really are and that is not truth either. However, in all things we need to strive for accuracy. We never need lies to testify of the One who is the Truth.

Regarding the current separation between Todd and Shonnah Bentley, Rick Joyner, who has almost daily contact to Todd Bentley, writes in The History and Future of the Present Revival - Part 9:

Over the last couple of weeks, there has been an increasing swirl of controversy regarding Todd Bentley. I have had almost daily contact with him, and he asked me to post the following:

>>Todd Bentley asked me to convey his appreciation for all the prayers, expressions of love, and concern while he tries to navigate through this present situation. He is grieved by the trouble and confusion this has caused, especially to his friends, coworkers, and all who have trusted him. He wants to make a clear statement about it, acknowledging his responsibility in this and the mistakes he made, but he feels that he should first meet with Pastor Bill Johnson, who is out of the country and will not be available for a couple more weeks. He asks that you would continue to pray for him, and he thanks those who are willing to be patient. He wants to do this right and not hastily or superficially.<<

I would like to accept personal responsibility for counseling Todd to wait until he has talked with Bill before trying to make the “full disclosure” of his mistakes. This needs to be done right and in a way that does not unnecessarily hurt even more people. In just a couple of weeks, things should have calmed down enough for a statement to be made. Impatience is not a fruit of the Spirit, and I have personally never seen anything done under the kind of duress and pressure that some are trying to exert at this time that ended up not being a mistake.

The only thing that I have received from the Lord about this matter directly is that “those who rush to judgment will be exposed.” This entire matter, including the Lakeland Outpouring, is a test. To me, the miracles, healings, salvations, and profoundly changed lives that resulted in people, some that I personally know, make all that is happening now still worth it, many times over. (...)

Rick Joyner writes about the Outpouring meeting on 08.08.08 and the situation with Todd und Shonnah Bentley:

The History and Future of the Present Revival - Part 8:
We knew that our gathering on 8/8/08 would be significant, and we were not disappointed. Eight is the number of new beginnings, and we had many prophetic indications that this day was going to release a new beginning for us. It did.

The night before this gathering in our Breakout Meeting, there was an unusual and high level anointing. We later realized that 8/8/08 had already begun in the Lord because He starts His days on the evening before. Through the summer we have had extraordinary meetings, with exceptional healings, miracles, signs, and wonders. Even so, much of what has been happening at MorningStar has come through our youth and students, and we have been greatly looking forward to them returning in September from summer vacation. But on Thursday night, August 7, it was electric, and it felt like one of the meetings filled with the youth and kids even though many were not there. There was a renewing, and everyone was seemingly feeling and acting younger. This too is a sign. This anointing for renewal is for body, soul, and spirit. We are going to be getting younger rather than older in many ways.

The bride of Christ is called to be without spot, which speaks of her purity. That she will be without wrinkle speaks of her perpetual youthfulness. Because eight is the number of new beginnings, there was a spirit of renewal present here and it is manifesting in us in many ways. Of course, renewal and refreshing come from the presence of the Lord, and the Holy Spirit will quicken our mortal bodies. Not only are people having their visions and hopes renewed, but many have been feeling and even looking much younger after being in our meetings for a time.

These are also the times when we can expect “signs in the heavens and on the earth beneath” as prophesied in Acts 2:19. The thousands who came to our gathering on August 8 witnessed a significant one. Days before, a high pressure system had been sitting over the area, and the temperatures had been as high as 100 degrees. The night before our gathering, a low pressure system moved through, and cleared the air. When we began our 8/8/08 meeting at 5:00 p.m., according to the weather report, it was 88 degrees, and the wind was blowing at 8 mph. Though this is what we prayed for, it is of course far beyond our ability to do something like this. It was a sign from heaven.

August 8 is a special day for my family and our ministry. My daughter Amber’s birth was prophesied by Bob Jones in 1988 to come on August 8 and that she would weigh 8 pounds. Bob prophesied this two years before she was born on August 8, 1990, at about 8:00 a.m. She weighed 8 pounds just like we had been told. The prophecy was that she would be a sign of a new beginning that was coming to the church. That new beginning is here! Amber turned 18 on 8/8/08, which is the age of maturity, and we can expect to see the new breed of ministry that the Lord has been promising to now begin to emerge into their purposes.

It was also in 1988 when Bob Jones was told by the Lord that he had “lost his marbles in the garden,” as a metaphor of how mankind had lost its mind at the Fall in the Garden of Eden. Bob was also told that he would begin finding marbles in his literal garden that he planted each year, and they would each be a prophecy. On the day of Amber’s birth, Bob found marble number 8, and it was amber in color. Amber is the color of the glory of God and represents the coming of His glory to His people. In fact, we need to see His glory to get our sanity back and that is precisely what this new beginning is going to reveal—the glory of God.

When we were given this prophecy, Julie and I were not expecting to have any more children. Many Christians have likewise ceased to expect any more from God, but He has other plans! You may think your time of bearing fruit is over, but it does not matter how old you are because we have been given a new beginning. You have been given a new beginning. This is a new day! We, the church, are not going to be the same from this time forward. A great change has come, and though it may take some longer than others to recognize it, with some resisting it (as is always the case), a new thing has been released, and we will not be the same again.

Greater Signs and Wonders
We have seen more healings, miracles, and supernatural signs in the last sixteen weeks than we have in the last sixteen years—and we have experienced a lot in the past! We continually walk around in awe now, and this is without question a new level for us, but I also think it is just one more step back to what should be normal church life. This “new beginning” is actually a return to the “ancient paths,” the path of life that the church in the first century began to walk on before it was diverted from its course.

Nothing on this earth is as wonderful as knowing the Lord and watching Him do the wonderful things that He does. These are truly the days of miracles and wonders. As awesome as 8/8/08 was, and as our nightly Breakout Meetings are, He keeps on telling us to get ready for more! We still have not seen the birth, but what we have been experiencing are the last spiritual contractions, or birth pangs, before the birth. Again, this is not just about MorningStar or the Lakeland Outpouring, it is far bigger. True revival is coming to America!

This is about the harvest that is the end of the age. We need to have a clear perspective of what is coming so that we can be used in it. Every one of His people on the earth at this time has a significant calling to fulfill. For this reason it has also been our purpose from the beginning of the Breakout to equip the people who come to go home and release healing and miracles into their families, their churches, and their communities.

Todd Bentley’s Ministry on 8/8/08
We were very excited about having Todd Bentley back with us for the gathering on 8/8/08. Todd has stirred up the church like few others in recent times. There are also very few who are neutral about him. Immediately, unprecedented excitement and threats about Todd were coming. The threats encouraged us even more that this was from the Lord, but in these times, they must be taken seriously, and we prepared for a move of God and attacks from the enemy. As most of us have learned, the greater the move of God, the greater the attacks usually are.

We had food vendors, different exhibition tents, and bookstores set up and ready early in the morning, and people started coming just after 9:00 a.m., even though the main service was not scheduled to start until 5:00 p.m. By noon, the crowds were getting large, and everyone seemed to be having a great time in the festival atmosphere and the incredible weather.

When the meeting began, the presence of the Lord was heavy, and as often happens in our meetings, many people’s eyes were opened to start seeing things in the spiritual realm. To see the energy and zeal on the crowd was most encouraging, and though there was plenty of room for everyone to sit, thousands actually stood for the entire five-hour meeting.

I have known Todd for years and have spoken at his conferences just as he has spoken at ours. However, he was as anointed that night as I’ve ever seen him, and he said it was the strongest he had felt for some time. His message was both profound and anointed. The ministry time was powerful, and many people, some of whom we knew, were healed. There were also what the Scripture calls “noteworthy miracles” (see Acts 4:16). When it was over, everyone on our team and everyone I talked to afterward said that the day had exceeded their expectations. God had no doubt smiled on this gathering in a remarkable and prophetic way. The DVD sets from that night will be classics.

Todd Bentley’s Personal Problems
I did not hear that Todd was going through a personal crisis until the day before our meeting with him here. When I saw him Wednesday night, he immediately wanted to share with me about his personal problems—especially about his recent separation from his wife. Todd did not share this in a way to try and justify himself, but he wanted me to know what was going on with him to give me an out if I did not think he should minister the next day. I greatly appreciated this.

I still do not know all of the details of his separation, but I did ask him if there had been any immorality on his part, or if he had affections for someone else that was causing this. He assured me that he had never committed adultery, and that there was no “other woman” that caused his separation. Some of his leaders who I talked to also confirmed that Todd had not been in any immoral relationship, though they were all grieving over Todd’s marital problems.

The problems Todd and his wife have had getting along have been public knowledge for several years. I don’t know enough of the details to blame anyone, but I know Todd quite well, and being married to him has got to be like being hand-cuffed to a hurricane. Todd is so intense he makes Mike Bickle and Bob Weiner seem laid back. I think he is very much like the Apostle Peter. What makes him capable of such extraordinary faith also makes him prone to extraordinary blunders. Todd is an extreme manifestation of an emerging extreme generation. His wife may deserve to sit at the right hand of the Lord in the kingdom, and anyone who has worked with him should be up there close somewhere too.

Like it or not, that is often the nature of those who accomplish some of the greatest spiritual exploits—they also make some of the biggest bloopers. Hearing about these problems did not surprise me at all. Since I have now heard about more details, I’m still not shocked. These are problems, and they need to be fixed, which includes repenting and turning around, but if we want the victories and breakthroughs we all hope and pray for, they usually come through people with the same kind of nature. Right after Jesus gave Peter one of the greatest commendations in Scripture for the receiving the greatest of all revelations, that Jesus is the Christ, and then gave him the keys to the kingdom, He had to give Peter one of the greatest rebukes in Scripture by calling him Satan! (see Matthew 16:18-23)

However, the Lord did not take the keys back from Peter, even after he later denied the Lord, and even later in his life when the youngest apostle, Paul, had to publicly rebuke him (see Galatians 2:11-15). It seems that most of those who are given these keys to unlock the spiritual doors to the kingdom will also be prone to make major blunders. This type of person is simply not going to do anything small—they will have great victories, and when they have defeats, they will be great too.

When I was in Lakeland a few months ago, I was told that Todd had been making a real effort to patch things up and heal their relationship, but in June she had left and refused any contact. Todd has now lost hope that it will be worked out, especially now that she has made it clear that she will not even see him. Todd is obviously frustrated and just wants to resolve this situation that has been so hard for so long.

In marriage, I have learned there are those who admit they have been through times when they wondered if their marriage would make it, and then there are liars. Relationships are hard, and the closer they are, the harder they can be. I tell everyone that I give premarital counseling to that the Lord has ordained their marriage in order to kill both of them! That is true. It is also worth it! The greatest gift He gave to man was marriage and family. However, to have a marriage that is good, both will have to die to themselves. If either one does not make the commitment to lay down their life for their mate and their family, then what was meant to be heaven can be hell.

Family is the foundation of society, and the weaker the family is, the weaker that society will be. The weaker the families are in the church, the weaker the church will be. That is why the family life must be strong of those whom the church accepts as leaders, and there are clear biblical standards for them. If we start compromising the clear biblical standards for morality, integrity, and relationships, we will fall, and we will fail at all that the Lord has called us to. Compromising clear biblical standards can never be on the table—for anyone, regardless of how much power they walk in, how great they can preach, or how they can mobilize people.

We are also living in a society where about half of the people have now been divorced. Many more are refusing to get married because of the problems they have witnessed and the pain they suffered when their parents went through a divorce. The children are always the biggest victims of a divorce, and the meltdown in family is one of the great tragedies and great emergencies of our times. It is therefore understandable that some want to make a big deal out of Todd’s marital problems—it is a big deal.

So, should someone who is divorced be disqualified from ministry or from leadership in the church? How can we disqualify someone from ministry or leadership for something that would disqualify God? In Jeremiah 3, we are told that God gave Israel a certificate of divorce. God is divorced. Nearly half the people in our churches have been divorced. A good many Christians now stay away from the church because they have suffered a divorce, and they feel condemned by the church for it. This is an issue that we need to address for the church, not just Todd.

When God got a divorce, was it His fault? Of course not! He was the most perfect Husband there could ever be, but He had a wayward wife that He finally gave up on. That is what happened, and if you do not believe me, go read it yourself. There is a limit to what even God will put up with and rightly so. There are things that justify divorce. Even so, I think it is because the Lord Himself went through a divorce that He hates divorce so much. Divorce is always a tragedy and usually even more for the children than for the parents.

I am not at all saying this to justify Todd or condemn him. At present, I still do not know enough about his situation to condemn or justify anyone. Unrighteous judges, who are often those who rush to judgment, are also condemned in Scripture. I am writing this to try to keep some from stumbling by jumping to conclusions. We have a brother, a sister, their children, and a ministry that is really hurting right now. I greatly appreciate Todd’s willingness to keep ministering and praying for the healing of those who are afflicted and hurting, but he, his family, and his ministry need much healing right now. One thing that would help them and the body of Christ, possibly more than anything else, is to see some real Christian charity expressed in this situation and some righteous judges stand up, which is the duty of true elders in the church.

It would be one of the great tragedies to the body of Christ in our times to lose a ministry like Todd has. He is called to start much more than the Lakeland Outpouring, and just as the Lord went around destroying the works of the enemy by healing the sick, casting out demons, and demonstrating the power of the kingdom, Todd is doing that. He is taking ground in real power ministry on a level that has not been seen in decades. To lose Todd, and to lose Fresh Fire Ministries, would be a major defeat for the body of Christ. We would survive, and we would still ultimately prevail, but the cost of this defeat would be great.

So what do we do? First, in all things we must keep in mind that “love never fails” (see I Corinthians 13:8). How would the Lord respond to this? How can we see this through His eyes? We already know because He showed us. In II Corinthians 5:14 Paul wrote, “For the love of Christ controls us.” How would we behave if Christ’s love was controlling us? When mankind fell, He did not criticize, gossip about us, or condemn us—He laid down His life for us.

The world will never believe our gospel of redemption and restoration until we learn to redeem and restore. Let’s take a worst case scenario here and say that Todd was guilty of terrible things and is the one at fault in the separation—what should our response be? We are told in Galatians 6:1:

Brethren, even if a man is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, lest you too be tempted.

So, if anyone has been “caught in any trespass,” those who are “spiritual” must restore them. Those who are truly spiritual approach every situation with that goal—redemption and restoration. This is more than just forgiving them—it is getting them back to the place they were. The next verse says, “Bear one another's burdens, and thus fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2).

Already there is some gloating over this situation. Some are trying to use it to promote themselves. Every situation like this is a test for everyone. Some will pass and some will fail, and the nature of everyone will be exposed. Those who truly walk in the Spirit of Christ will be obvious. The Holy Spirit is the Helper, and those who truly walk by the Spirit will be trying to help, because they love Todd, his wife, the church, and most of all, the Lord who already laid down His life for them.

This is a real opportunity for the church to show some maturity and Christian love. This does not mean compromise, but it does mean addressing this situation in an almost opposite way that we have tended to do in the past. We will all reap what we sow, and if we want to reap grace, we must learn to sow grace every chance we get. If we want to receive mercy, we need to learn to sow mercy every chance we get. Here’s a good chance!

So what does this mean for the Lakeland Outpouring? I will address that in a bit more depth in the next Bulletin, but for now, it can continue and it can get even stronger. A well has been opened there that does not have to be shut again. However, it does depend on a lot of decisions made by the church there. We should be praying for them and asking how we can help them because they were used to release something very important to the worldwide body of Christ. Todd had already decided to turn the Lakeland meetings over to Stephen Strader and to only take a couple of other meetings over the next few months to rest and sort out his life.

What will be happening at MorningStar? I will address that in a bit more depth also, but we received a new commission on 8/8/08, and we are going higher, deeper, and further. We are close to the birth of something we were created for, that we believe will begin this fall, around September 21. We have been given that date like we were 8/8/08 and it is not a coincidence that this date is exactly six months after the Honoring the Father’s Conference we hosted with WhiteDove Ministries. Because of this, we moved our Harvest Conference to begin on September 18, and the Worship & Warfare Conference to begin on September 22, so September 21 will be the Sunday in-between. Come to either or both of these if you can, and you may be a part of history.

For information about these conferences, there is a blurb at the end of this Bulletin. More information is available on our website at www.morningstarministries.org. Because this will be a large outdoor event, we are also making a place for dozens of ministries, churches, Christian artists, publishers, etc., to lease a tent at a nominal charge so they will be able to share about their ministries and resources. We will have midnight bonfires, roaming worship and ministry teams, and other events that will create a festival atmosphere that is conducive to members of the body getting to know one another. Many important bonds between them will begin at this event. This one really could be historic, and I wouldn’t be surprised if there were 8,888 that come.

By the way, did you notice that this is Special Bulletin #8? I didn’t plan that, and I just noticed it myself. This is just the year of eight for us. Even our NFL team, The Panthers, finished 8–8 last year. For us that was a perfect season!

History of TheCall
In 1997 our nation witnessed one of the largest Christian gatherings in American history. The Promise Keepers, a ministry specifically focused on igniting men with a passion for Jesus, gathered a million men on the National Mall in Washington DC to call men across our nation to a lifestyle of purity and godliness. A man named Lou Engle was deeply impacted by this highly profound event and burdened with a God-given dream. The vision was to raise up a corresponding youth movement to cry out to God for a revival to sweep across America. .

Two years after the inception of this dream, a woman approached Lou Engle and asked if he had ever considered putting young people on the Mall like the Promise Keepers did in 1997. Taken back and amazed, Lou replied that two years prior he had been burdened with a dream to see the youth of our nation gathering at the National Mall. He confessed he actually prophesied this coming gathering would be a sign from God that there was still hope for our nation. The woman promptly wrote a check for $100,000, setting into action a whole chain of supernatural events that would eventually result in the TheCall DC on September 2nd, 2000. God’s blessing was clearly manifest throughout the day as the presence of the Holy Spirit infused the prayer, worship and intermittent words of encouragement from our nations spiritual leaders. The result of one man's obedience to the God-given dream was an attendance of over 400,000 young people.

After this TheCall DC in September 2000, TheCall was exported across the nation to twelve different locations, each one gathering thousands of people hungry for a movement of God. Rather than promoting man’s good ideas, these massive gatherings were spent in corporate fasting, prayer, and worshiping before God. Specific regional issues were confronted in each gathering in the place of prayer. In each Call, issues such as racism, sexual immorality and abortion were brought into light and repented for corporately by the body of Christ. In New York, Dallas, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Nashville, and Kansas City, a movement of prayer and fasting has filled stadiums with the sounds of worship and the incense of prayer. This divinely-initiated movement of repentance has extended beyond the narrow borders of America as TheCall has traveled to Australia, Germany, the Philippines, Norway, England and Israel.
